STANDARDISED ASTHMA QUALITY OF LIFE QUESTIONNAIRE (AQLQ(S))
A unique feature of the original Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ) is that five of the questions in the activity domain are "patient-specific". At the first visit, the patient identifies five activities which he/she does regularly and which are limited because of asthma. These five activities remain constant for this patient at each follow-up visit. Although great in theory, this patient-specific approach is not practical. Patients' activities change over time and identifying the activities is time consuming. Therefore, we have developed 5 "standardised" activities to replace the patient-specific ones in the AQLQ. These five generic activities incorporate the activities that were most frequently chosen by patients in studies in which the original AQLQ was used. The Standardised Asthma Quality of Life Questionnaire (AQLQ(S)) has been fully validated. Test-retest reliability and cross-sectional validity are almost identical to the original AQLQ as are responsiveness and longitudinal validity. In addition the minimal important difference is the same at 0.5. The AQLQ(S) is now the most extensively used of all our asthma quality of life questionnaires because it has strong measurement properties and is quick and easy to use.
